Smadar and Mirit are beginning their Israeli military service. Assigned to a Jerusalem checkpoint, their daily grind consists of checking Palestinian workers’ I.D.s, searching busses for bombs, and maintaining peace in the streets. The awesome responsibility of this duty requires a maturity at times beyond the reach of two 18 year old girls, who out of teenage necessity also seek time for shopping, boys, rebelliousness and fun. Close to Home contrasts the daily boredom of military duty, the relentless Palestinian/Israeli tension in the streets, and the maturing of two disparate young soldiers to tell a story of living and working in a world in which there are no easy answers.
