Rosh HaShanah Children’s Service

The Rosh HaShanah children’s service, led jointly by
both parents and children, was held on Thursday, September
13. About 15 or so families attended with their children,
whose ages ranged up to 3rd grade. It was a very educational
and spiritual type of service, in which both parents and children
enjoyed mulling the meaning of Rosh HaShana, as well
as the beautiful prayers that accompany the service.
A warm-up to the service included a round of “Head,
Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in Hebrew. The kids really enjoyed
the “good deed, bad deed” game, in which each child
(some with a parent’s help) told the group what he/she considered
to be his/her good deed or bad deed for the year.
Everyone enjoyed the blowing of the shofar by Randy
Rosenstein, with support from his father, Howard. The children
were fascinated as they heard the shofar sounding, followed
by a reading explaining the meaning behind the blasts.
As the service wound down, the symbolism behind the
apples and honey made the treat even sweeter for all. After
the service, everyone mingled while munching on bagels,
fruit, chips, and assorted snacks. Afterwards, the children
had fun making a decorating a craft plate and dipping bowl
to take home.
We hope everyone had a nice time, and that the emphasis
on spending time with family during this time of introspection
left both parents and children feeling inspired.
