OUTREACH TO YOUNG JEWISH HANDI CAPABLE ADULTS

AND THEIR FAMILIES

One of the nice things about living in a smaller community is that people know each other and are there to lend a hand.  One of the challenges is that when there are specialized needs, there may not be the resources or services to address them.  I find this to be especially true in regards to programs for young adults with learning and developmental disabilities.

While it takes a lot of work for the parents, during the school years children with special needs are eligible for many services and programs.  As older adults there are often additional services available.  Young adults however are in a “no man’s land.”  Resources are limited and there is little opportunity to socialize: and as many of their friends go on to college and/or move out of the house they become more and more isolated from peers and dependent on their parents.

While we do not have any magic solutions, Jewish Family Services is going  to provide a place for this group of Jewish young adults and their families to meet and get to know each other.  The goal is for the young adults to have the chance to socialize and perhaps develop friendships and for the parents to have an opportunity to share resources and ideas.  Attached  you will find the information about our first program.

We think this is an important opportunity for our community to continue our Tarrant County tradition of providing programs and services for all fellow Jews.

Our initial thoughts are to provide four programs per year.  Thanks to the Federation and Jewish Women’s International we have the funding necessary to offer this much needed service.

We would appreciate your help in notifying anyone who you think would be interested in the program.
