Ben Weiger, a member of the CBS board of directors
currently serving as social chair, works as the Chief, Hydrologic
Services Branch, National Weather Service, Southern
Region Headquarters. He lives in Arlington with his wife,
Fran, and son, Sam, who is about
to become Bar Mitzvah.
Ben was born in January
1954 and lived for 25 years in
Brooklyn. His father was from Poland,
his mother from Israel.
After graduating from
CCNY, Ben worked for the U.S.
Geological Survey. Starting out as
a hydrologist, he generated river/
flood forecasts for river systems.
He then worked at NWS
headuarters for ten years providing
operational/technical/policy support for field offices across
the nation. Ben has over 30 years of experience working for
the National Weather Service, the past 10 at the Southern
Region Headquarters, providing support for offices in a tenstate
area covering the southeast, Tennessee Valley, and southern
plains.
He has received three major awards in the past five
years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administratoin
(NOAA) Administrators Award for a leadership role in marketing
the flood safety awareness campaign slogan: “Turn
around. Don’t drown”. He received the same award in 2007
for a leadership role in developing and implementing a precipitation
analysis web service for the nation. In addition,
Ben received the Department of Commerce Bronze Award
for operational support during hurricane Katrina.
Over the years, Ben has been involved in B’nai B’rith,
ADL, Union of Councils for Soviet Jewry, and The Jewish
Federation. He has also worked with Hillel.
Many of you might have seen Ben as he conducted Israeli
folk dances for several CBS functions. He has also been
active in Mitzvah Day, the Gala, and ushering for the High
Holy Days.
