On December 29, 2008, Sam Weiger, son of Ben and Fran Weiger, had the honor of becoming a Jewish man (Bar Mitzvah) at the Southern Wall in Jerusalem. The weather was rainy and cold; typical for Central Israel during the winter. Rabbi Boyden officiated the ceremony. Sam’s second and third cousins, and great aunt from his father’s side of the family, were present with umbrellas in hand. Sam recited the blessings before and after the Torah, and 12 verses from Parsha Vayigash. Sam had another opportunity to visit the family synagogue built at the turn of the century in the Buchari district (Jews born in Uzbekistan) of Jerusalem. Sam and family had the honor of viewing an Ark covering in memory of Ben’s mother’s parents. Congratulations Sam on this momentous and memorable occasion in your life!! Here are some pictures from Sam’s Bar Mitzvah in Israel.
Mishloah Manot (sending of gifts) is the custom derived from the Megillah (Scroll of Esther), which we read on Purim. According to the Megillah, “one is to observe Purim as days of feasting and merry-making, and as an occasion of sending gifts to one another and gifts to the poor.”
(Esther 9:22)
We at Beth Shalom would like to revive this tradition and offer you a unique opportunity to shower your
friends with delicious homemade treats in a beautiful Purim Hamantaschen-shaped box. Each box contains freshly baked Hamantaschen, fruit and nuts!
It’s simple: fill out the attached form, and send it back to the office. The office will notify the recipient of your generous gift, and they can pick their baskets up at the Purim service on Monday, March 9, 2009. Dinner is at 6:00pm and services begin at 7:00pm. More info will follow.
Return this form to the office with payment by Friday, February 27th
